Revenue collectors, the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) has refunded tobacco farmers withholding tax amounting to K9.4 billion from 2021 up to date.
Speaking during a meeting between MRA and the farmers in Lilongwe on Wednesday, the authority’s head of corporate affairs Steven Kapoloma said the refund has been paid to 14,800 farmer clubs.
He said farmers are now paying 1% withholding tax from 3% following the burden that was given to MRA to be paying back to farmers that did not sell to that 3% tax.
Leader of the farmers, Group Village Kasangazi from Mponela has since welcomed the development.
