The state President Dr Lazarus Chakwera has stated the importance of investing in the mining sector, by hitghlighting that it is key in the transformation of Malawi’s economic growth. Chakwera said this yesterday during the official opening of the 2024 Malawi Mining Investment Forum at BICC in Lilongwe.
The President called for an organized mining sector, he said despite the country being blessed with mineral resources, the sector has faced exploitation by foreigners and illegal local miners therefore he advised citizens in the country to reject any contract that does not guarantee a return on investment for Malawians who deserve to be primary beneficiaries of the country’s mineral resources.
Minister of Mining, Monica Chang’anamuno commended the forum for serving as a platform for different stakeholders to discuss strategies for attracting investments, fostering partnerships and growing the mining sector for sustainable economic development.
In his remarks, South Sudan Minister of Mining, Martin Abucha said his country’s representation at the forum will foster collaboration in contributing to utilizing mineral resources by adding value addition to the mining sector.
Making a presentation, the Chairperson of Akatswiri Holdings, Hilton Eneya Banda urged local investors to consider investing in the mining sector, noting that the country possesses crucial minerals such as Rutile, Niobium, Uranium and artisanal gold.
The forum aimed at showcasing the country’s vast mineral and petroleum opportunities, emphasizing exploration prospects and outlining strategies to harness these resources for mutual benefit.
