First Grade Magistrate (FGM) court sitting in Ntchisi on Wednesday convicted and sentenced 24-year-old Brian Banda to serve 30 months in jail for impersonating a nurse.
Public Relations Officer for Mponela Police Station, Macpatson Msadala, said Banda, who is a tailor, was arrested in Mponela in a nurse’s attire.
“The court heard through state prosecutor Sergeant Evance Banda that when Banda was questioned, he lied that he was a nurse at Mponela rural. He, however, failed to mention names of his workmates, which raised eyebrows and led to his arrest.
“Appearing in court, Banda pleaded guilty to the charge of impersonating a public officer contrary to section 99(b) of the penal code but pleaded for leniency, arguing he is a first offender and is the breadwinner for his family.
“The state asked for a stiffer sentence to deter other would-be offenders to which FGM Talakwanji M’ndala agreed and slapped Banda with a 30-month imprisonment sentence with hard labour,” said Msadala.
Banda comes from Masunda Village, Traditional Authority Phambala in Ntcheu District
