In a recent interview on Monday, Emmanuel Chiweyo, Programs Manager of Koinonia Mission, announced the launch of the organization’s Forest Strategy. The ambitious plan aims to plant 5,000 new trees over the next three years, with a vision to enhance tree and canopy cover in various districts while preserving existing trees.
Accelerating Planting Plans for a Resilient Community Forest
Chiweyo emphasized the acceleration of their planting plans over the next three years. The initiative will focus on creating a resilient community forest, prioritizing areas with the lowest tree cover during each planting season. Koinonia Mission aims to concentrate efforts on planting trees in strategic locations such as schools, care homes, and healthcare settings.
“We want to plant trees in the right places, where their benefits are greatest and will have the most positive impact on peoples’ lives,” Chiweyo stated.
Aligned with National Tree Planting Initiatives
Annually, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Climate Change organizes tree planting activities from December 15 to April 15, promoting awareness of the significance of trees and forests. The 2023/2024 theme, “Forest Innovation in Action: Reforestation for a Sustainable Tomorrow,” underscores a proactive approach to address environmental challenges.
Community Engagement Encouraged by Local Leaders
Chifundo Katoweka, the Salima district chairperson, and James Mwenda, the district commissioner, have urged the community to actively participate in ensuring the success of the upcoming tree planting season. Their encouragement aligns with Koinonia Mission’s goal of fostering a sense of community responsibility for environmental sustainability.
