Police in Namwera, Mangochi, have apprehended Abdullah Nandi, 38, for allegedly injuring a 20-year-old suspected criminal, Major Majid. Nandi purportedly tied Majid to his Ford Courier motor vehicle and dragged him along the road after catching him stealing tomatoes from his garden.
The incident took place on the morning of March 24, 2024, at Mkambiri village, Traditional Authority Bwananyambi in Mangochi.
The Police became aware of the incident after a video clip surfaced on social media, showing Nandi and his accomplices torturing Majid by dragging him behind the vehicle as punishment.
Upon discovering the location of the incident, a team of detectives from Namwera promptly intervened and apprehended Nandi.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Majid was caught stealing tomatoes from Nandi’s garden earlier that day. He was then subjected to torture along an earth road, approximately 200 meters away, as he was being taken to Masuku Police Unit. However, upon reaching a junction near the tarmac road, the perpetrators untied Majid, fearing public detection.
Majid sustained multiple bruises and has been taken to Namwera Health Centre for medical treatment.
Nandi has been charged with Acts intended to cause grievous harm contrary to section 235 of the Penal Code. He will appear in court once the necessary paperwork is completed.
Police in the district are advising the public not to take the law into their own hands to prevent such serious crimes.
Both the suspect and victim hail from Mkambiri village, Traditional Authority Bwananyambi in Mangochi.
