The Government of Iceland has provided furniture valued at K28 million to Nkhotakota District Council by furnishing the council chamber, as one way of improving the welfare of workers at the council.
In an interview, Nkhotakota District Programmes Lead for Iceland, Alice Nthenda Msosa, said the support is part of the activities being implemented under the Nkhotakota District Basic Services Programme.
Msosa said that Government of Iceland is committed to continue providing support to the district in various areas for the smooth implementation of the first phase of the multi-billion kwacha programme.
“The support is part of activities being implemented in the district, and we believe that it will provide a conducive environment for holding meetings at the council, as the chamber has to look presentable, said Msosa.
Nkhotakota Basic Services Programme Desk Officer at the council, Alick Munthali, described the support as historical, as it has addressed the challenge of lack of furniture at the district council.
“Let me take this opportunity to urge every stakeholder to take part in taking care of this new furniture at the council’s chamber,” said Munthali.
In the first phase of the Nkhotakota Basic Services Programme, Government of Iceland has also supported the council with four vehicles that include ambulances, school desks, and modern medical beds, in addition to setting up a fistula centre at Nkhotakota District Hospital.
The Icelandic Government is also constructing school and administration blocks, as well as semi-detached teacher houses with solar electricity in eight primary schools in the district.
The Nkhotakota Basic Services Programme is supported with a total of K11.4 billion to support sectors of health, education, water, and sanitation in the first four years.
