As one way of preparing for 2025 general elections, Balaka Police Station on Wednesday held a round table discussion with various political party representatives on political violence during campaign period.
Malawi will next year hold tripartite elections and it is against this background that the police station hosted political party leaders to put strategies on how to avoid political violence.
Speaking during the meeting, Officer-in-Charge for Balaka Police Station, Senior Superintendent Dan Sauteni, said engaging all political party leaders in the district before campaign period will help police and political party leaders to join hands so that the district can be free from political violence during and after campaign period.
He said: “Police will continue engaging all party leaders in the district until general elections are conducted in 2025.
“Let me warn all party leaders as well as their followers in the district that police will not spare anyone perpetrating political violence during campaign period.”
On her part, United Democratic Front Governor for Balaka Districts Ngwangwa Area, Hadja Makalakala, commended police for engaging party leaders in the discussions and described it as timely.
“Let me commend the Officer-in-Charge and his management for organising this important meeting. As political party leaders, we will adhere to the discussions and inform our party followers. Violence is not tolerated at all cost,” said Makalakala.
