Malawi and India Strengthen Agricultural Ties.

Date:

Minister of Agriculture Sam Kawale has praised the long-standing cooperation between Malawi and India, particularly in the agricultural sector. Speaking at the 19th CII India Africa Business Conclave in India on August 21, 2024, Kawale expressed gratitude for India’s support in transforming Malawi’s agricultural sector, a key aspect of the country’s development agenda, Malawi 2063.
Kawale acknowledged India’s significant contributions, including a $180 million line of credit for agricultural infrastructure development projects since 2008, as well as financial assistance, such as disaster relief in the form of 1,000 metric tons of rice.
The minister emphasized Malawi’s desire to continue its partnership with India, seeking financial and technical support in various areas, including agricultural schemes development, digitalization of research data, disease vaccine production, and conservation agriculture. He also highlighted the potential for collaboration in establishing artificial insemination centers and implementing mega-farms to commercialize agriculture.
Kawale believes the partnership will enable Malawi to explore pathways for agri-food systems transformation, identify challenges and opportunities, and drive progress in the agricultural sector.
