The Pharmacy and Medicines Regulatory Authority (PMRA) has responded to concerns about medication quality in Malawi, following a study by Bahir Dar University in Ethiopia. PMRA Director General Mphatso Kawaye refuted the study’s findings, citing methodological flaws and emphasizing Malawi’s rigorous quality control measures.
Kawaye assured the public that Malawian pharmaceuticals meet high standards, with regular monitoring and testing by the National Medicines Quality Control Laboratory. Geodfrey Kadewere, Director of Health and Technical Support Services at the Ministry of Health, cautioned academic institutions to be mindful of the potential impact of their studies on the public.
PMRA data shows a 4% prevalence of substandard medications in Malawi, which the authority considers reassuring. The PMRA has urged citizens to trust their oversight of the medication market, ensuring the availability of quality medications.
