The Public Affairs Committee (Pac) has highlighted the significance of its members being aware of peace agreements to prevent a recurrence of conflicts between Muslims and Christians. This follows previous clashes in the Eastern Region over the wearing of hijabs in Christian government-aided schools.
Pac facilitated a mediation process, resulting in a memorandum of understanding (MoU) permitting Muslim girls to wear hijabs in government-supported schools, provided they align with the school’s uniform. Pac’s Publicity Secretary, Bishop Gilford Matonga, emphasized the need for grassroots awareness of peace agreements to ensure their effectiveness.
Saiti Jambo, a technical committee member, acknowledged initial tensions but noted that continued engagement led to a successful agreement. Pac organized a meeting in Liwonde, Machinga, to raise awareness of the MoU and hijab posters among religious leaders, promoting peaceful coexistence
