Phalombe First Grade Magistrate court, convicted and sentenced a 28 year old woman, Modester Bokosi, from Bokosi Village, Traditional Authority Mkhumba in Phalombe district, to 7 years imprisonment with hard labour, for unlawfully wounding her Brother in law.
In court proceedings, the court heard through the state prosecutor Sergeant Maureen Namainja that on June 06, 2023, around 20:00 hours, the convict hacked her brother in-law on right hand using a panga knife when he was trying to separate the convict from her husband who were fighting.
Appearing before First Grade Magistrate Leornad Mtosa, the convict pleaded not guilty to the charge leveled against her, that prompted the state to parade three witnesses to prove beyond reasonable doubt.
In mitigation, convict pleaded for leniency saying that she is the first offender much on that she has three children she looks after who will suffer if she gets a jail term and her husband left her after she got arrested.
In submission, Namainja prayed for stiffer punishment to deter the would be offenders.
Passing judgement, First Grade Magistrate Mtosa concurred with the state henceforth he sentenced Bokosi to 7 years imprisonment with hard labour with effect from the date of her arrest June 13th, 2023.
