In ensuring a successful fight against pollution in the country, the National Water Resources Authority has imposed a four million kwacha fine on Universal Industries Limited over water pollution cases in Malangalanga Stream.
In a statement released and signed by the National Water Resources Authority public relations officer Masozi Kasambala on Wednesday 12th July 2023, the authorities from NWRA had to some few days ago embark on an inspection exercise at the company’s premises to find out the unlawful discharge of untreated wastes and what the industry should do if found guilty, since the act is contrary to section 88(1) of the Water Resources Act.
“The inspection exercise established that Universal Industries Limited has been discharging untreated effluent into Malangalanga Stream, a tributary of Lilongwe River, thereby causing water pollution”. Reads part of the statement.
“The institution has also been conveying effluent from its factory through storm drains into Malangalanga Stream.In view of the above, the National Water Resources Authority has imposed a Four Million Kwacha (MK4,000,000.00) fine on Universal Industries Limited payable to the Authority by 10th August, 2023”. It adds.
Meanwhile, the NWRA has ordered Universal Industries some other things including to declare and regularize all water abstractions and effluent discharge facilities in all their facilities countrywide.
