Minister of Transport and Public Works, Jacob Hara says Songwe One Stop Border post in Karonga will facilitate cross border trade activities between Malawi and Tanzania.
Speaking on after inspecting the construction site for the facility, Hara said the one stop border post, which is currently at land reclamation phase, will reduce delays that people encounter during clearance of goods.
“One stop border post is a system, which means upon completion, the system from Tanzania side and system from Malawi side will be in a strong tie so that people should not stop twice when either leaving or entering Malawi and Tanzania.
“When the people want to enter Malawi they will be cleared here in Malawi and when people go out of the country they will just pass the border and get cleared in Tanzania, in this way they will not stop twice and delay challenges will be history”, said Hara.
The minister further highlighted that the one stop border post has been designed to be constructed higher above the flood-line so that its operations should not get affected with floods from Songwe River during periods of heavy rains.
Project Manager for Jiangxi Construction Corporation, Yang Jian assured the minister that the company will ensure there is good workmanship on the project.
