Six people believed to be of the same family have died in a road accident after a vehicle they were travelling in was involved in a head-on collision at Mbuna Area, along the Dedza-Lilongwe part of the M1 Road, at around 9:30pm on Monday.
According to Lilongwe Police spokesperson Hastings Chigalu the six have been identified as Kefasi Pachi, 47, (driver), mother Getrude Pachi, 65, Shukrani Pachi, 25, Estina Pachi, 22, Ayilepile Pachi, 17, and Tony Kasamiro, 4.
It is reported that Pachi was driving a Honda Freed Hatch-Back, registration number BZ 10972, from the direction of Diamphwi, heading to Kamphata with five passengers on board.
“Upon arrival at the said area, he collided head-on with a G4S Security Company motor vehicle, Hino Lorry, registration number BT 10860, that was being driven by Dennis Chirambo, 43.
“Following the impact, the Honda Freed driver and all his passengers, that is three females, and two males including a young boy, sustained severe head injuries,” Chigalu explained.
He said the 6 were all pronounced dead upon arrival at Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH). The family hailed from Ngwaya Village, Traditional Authority Liwonde in Machinga District.
Meanwhile, the driver of the G4S vehicle escaped with minor injuries.
The family was returning to Chinsapo in Lilongwe from Machinga where they had gone to attend a chieftaincy installation ceremony.
