M’mbelwa District Council on Friday conducted a monthly routine clean-up exercise to promote sanity and hygiene in the district.
Speaking during an interview, District Commissioner for the council, Rodney Simwaka, said the routine exercise reminds people of the importance of tidying up their surroundings and avoiding littering.
He said: “Communities around Mzimba Boma should come forward in large numbers to conduct clean-up activities that will make the district a habitable environment”.
Simwaka said clean surroundings are key to reduction of hygiene-related diseases, such as cholera.
Chairperson for Mzimba South Market, Fikani Nyirenda, hailed the clean-up activity, saying clean and neat surroundings attract customers.
He said: “In business, customers opt for a place which is clean since it gives a guarantee that they will not get infected by hygiene-related diseases.”
Nyirenda hailed the council for increasing number of bins in the market to ensure that all litter is in one place for easy waste management.
