A 34 year old man has died after being hit by a motor vehicle on July 25 2023 at Mpupunthe area in Dowa district.

He is identified as Bernard Katiwiri from Chadza Village Traditional Authority Mkukula in the district.

According to the public relations officer for Dowa Police, Sergeant Alice Sitima, a Mazda Bongo registration LL 5544 was being driven by Chimwemwe Chambodza from the direction of Dzaleka heading towards Dowa turn off with 10 (ten) passengers on board.

“Upon arrival at Mpupunthe, the driver, while descending a slope, lost control of the vehicle due to over speeding.”

“The vehicle swerved to the offside dirty verge where it hit Katiwiri who was pushing his bicycle heading the same direction, and this caused the vehicle to overturn.” Said Sitima.

Following the impact Katiwiri sustained internal injuries and was rushed to Dowa district hospital where he was initially admitted before being referred to Kamuzu central hospital where he was pronounced dead while receiving treatment.

All passengers from the vehicle escaped with minor injuries while the motor vehicle was extensively damaged.

Meanwhile, police in the district are urging all road users to observe traffic rules and regulations to avoid accidents.
