Police in Balaka have arrested a 20-year-old man for allegedly killing his 71-year-old grandmother.

The suspect identified as Chipiliro Goodson is suspected to have killed his grandmother Ireen Mtumiki on Saturday July 15 2023 at Mtandiwa Village in Traditional Authority Nkaya in Balaka District.

Police records indicate that the deceased was staying alone in her house and a few months ago the suspect came from Liwonde to visit his grandmother (now deceased) at Mtandiwa Village where he started stealing properties such as chickens and maize belonging to his grandmother (now deceased).

This did not please the grandmother who ordered the suspect to leave the village and go back to his mother at Liwonde of which the suspect was not pleased with decision by his grandmother.

Prior to the incident, on July 12 2023, the grandmother called the suspect’s sister to the village to help her harvesting pigeon peas and upon arrival at home, she did not find her grandmother and search was made to all possible places but to no avail till on Saturday July 15 2023 when the deceased’s daughter went to the house of her mother (now deceased) where she found the suspect at his boy’s quarter whilst shivering.

Then the daughter to the deceased became suspious on the suspect’s attitude which prompted her to search in the house of the suspect.

Upon entering into the suspect’s house, she found the dead body lying in the bedroom whilst covered with a mat, worn out iron sheets and a door frame and had two cut wounds on the head.

The matter was reported to police, who in turn visited the scene accompanied by a medical personnel from Balaka District Hospital who pronounced death as due to severe bleeding secondary to two cut wounds on the head after postmortem.
Upon search, police recovered an axe and a hoe with blood stains.

The suspect, Chipiliro Goodson, who comes from Mtandiwa Village in Traditional Authority Nkaya in Balaka District, will appear before court soon to answer a charge of murder.
