Malawi Communication Regulatory Authority says is at an advanced stage of implementing Central Equipment Identification Registration project.
This has been said on Wednesday, at Club Makokola Retreat in Mangochi district during a meeting held by MACRA with stakeholders where among others the regulatory body reported the progress of the CEIR project.
In his words Director General of MACRA, Daudi Suleman said all the important activities regarding to the project have been carried out.
According to Suleman they came up with the project to ensure safety of Malawians as people will registering their sim cards and handsets as a way of intesfying security so that one can not be easily robbed on phones and the internet considering that there are a lot of scammers in the country.
Suleman also disclosed that the ministry of information and digitisation is working on five new law that is aiming at providing proper authorisation to those who are using the gadgets.
On his part, Nkhumbo Phiri who is the chairperson of Mobile Fraud Taskforce said scammers are using sim card for stealing and expressed optimistic with the coming of CEIR. He said that the system will easly identify scammers.
Airtel Malawi, TNM, Reserve Bank of Malawi, Malawi police and Malawi prison service attended the meeting.
