Mighty Wanderers suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat against hosts Uniao Desportiva (UD) Songo in the final of a four-team mini tournament at Campol Sul Stadium in Tete Province yesterday.
The only goal of the match came in the 53rd minute, courtesy of Luis Miquissone, whose shot left Wanderers goalkeeper Richard Chipuwa with no chance.
The Nomads started the game brightly, forcing a corner-kick in the second minute, but it did not yield results. UD Songo gradually found their rhythm, with former Wanderers winger Yamikani Chester leading an early attack that went off target. Both teams created multiple chances in the first half but failed to capitalize, going into halftime goalless.
Miquissone broke the deadlock shortly after the break, and despite several substitutions from coach Bob Mpinganjira, including bringing on Blessings Mwalilino, Chimwemwe Nkhoma, and Francisco Madinga, Wanderers failed to find an equalizer. Mwalilino had the best chance to level the score in the 82nd minute but produced a weak shot that was easily saved.
After the match, Mpinganjira acknowledged that the tournament was valuable in assessing the team’s weaknesses.
“We have spotted some weak areas that we need to work on,” he said.
Earlier in the tournament, Civil Service United (Civo) and Chingale FC played to a 2-2 draw, with Chifundo Damba and Dustan Banda scoring for Civo.
Wanderers secured their place in the final by defeating Chingale 3-2, while UD Songo advanced after a 1-0 win over Civo.
