MACRA to Introduce System for Monitoring Fake News and Misinformation

Date:

The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) has announced its intention to award a contract to HASHCOM Ghana Limited for the implementation of an integrated system to monitor fake news, misinformation, and disinformation, as well as to analyze trends in Malawi.

Speaking at a press briefing in Lilongwe, MACRA Director General Daud Suleman clarified that the system will not engage in surveillance, censorship, or the infringement of digital rights. Instead, it will focus on analyzing publicly available information to help mitigate the spread of misleading content.

Suleman emphasized that MACRA has been fully transparent and adhered to all procurement laws in this process, describing the system as an institutional investment aimed at fostering growth in Malawi’s digital space.

The procurement process remains open for input or objections until 27 January, after which the system will be officially implemented.
