Lilongwe Mayor and FAMA Lead Tree-Planting Initiative to Promote Environmental Conservation

Date:

In an effort to promote environmental conservation and enhance the beauty of Malawi’s capital city, Her Worship Councillor Esther Sagawa, Mayor of Lilongwe, joined forces with the Film Association of Malawi (FAMA) to launch a tree-planting campaign along the new M1 road on Tuesday, January 21, 2025. The initiative united local filmmakers, artists, and community members to address the critical need for sustainable urban development.

During the event, Mayor Sagawa highlighted the importance of collective action in combating deforestation and climate change, which continue to threaten Malawi’s ecosystems. “Our city is growing rapidly, but with growth comes the responsibility to protect our environment,” the Mayor said. “This initiative is more than just planting trees; it’s about fostering a culture of environmental stewardship and leaving a legacy for future generations.”

The event underscored the vital role of partnerships in achieving environmental goals. Speaking on behalf of FAMA, President Dorothy Kingston emphasized the significance of the collaboration between the creative arts industry and local government. “As filmmakers, we tell stories that inspire change. Today, we are not just telling the story; we are part of it. We want to see a greener, cleaner Lilongwe that can be a source of pride for all Malawians,” Kingston said.

The initiative serves as a reminder of the need for all sectors of society to work together in addressing environmental challenges. The Mayor concluded by calling on individuals, schools, and other stakeholders to join in supporting the city’s conservation efforts. “Together, we can create a Lilongwe that is not only a hub of development but also a haven of natural beauty,” she remarked.

This tree-planting initiative marks a significant step in fostering environmental awareness and sustainable urban growth, ensuring that Lilongwe remains a vibrant and eco-friendly city for generations to come.
