Egenco Develops Emergency Plan for Power Generation During Rainfall Season

Date:

The Electricity Generation Company (Egenco) has put in place an emergency preparedness plan to ensure continuous power generation and supply during the 2024-25 rainfall season. This comes after the Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services forecasted above-normal rainfall during the season.
According to Egenco CEO Maxon Chitawo, the plan aims to minimize risks and prevent power blackouts. The company has backup power generators with a 40-megawatt capacity in case of damage to existing stations.
Egenco has implemented various measures to prepare for the rainfall season. Before the season, the company inspected dams, conducted preventive maintenance, checked equipment, and prepared access routes to power stations. Employees also underwent training and drills.
During the season, Egenco will monitor water levels and weather forecasts, activate its emergency response team, and coordinate with stakeholders. The company will also implement flood control measures and evacuate non-essential personnel if necessary.
The Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services has commended Egenco for its proactive approach. Director Lucy Mtilatila emphasized the importance of being prepared for extreme weather events, which are becoming more frequent due to climate change.
Malawi has experienced several disasters in recent years that have impacted electricity generation. In 2022, Cyclone Ana damaged the Kapichira Hydro Power Station dam, resulting in a loss of 129.6 megawatts. Cyclone Freddy also affected power generation in 2023.
