Senior Chief Bwananyambi and Nankumba from Mangochi district have urged traditional leaders in their areas to ensure that traditional initiations are conducted in line with school calendar.

In an interview with Angaliba on Wednesday August 2nd, the two senior chiefs said that they will not tolerate anyone keeping children in initiation Camps during the school period.

In her words Bwananyambi stressed on the need for the country to embrace Malawian culture, however it must do so by ensuring that cultural practices go together with the country’s development activities.

She further advised organisers who are locally known as “Angaliba” to observe the school calendar when performing their cultural activities.

On his part Senior Chief Nankumba also advised communities to have self control during the ceremonies as it has been observed that some men take advantage of the activities done to go out with other partners, a habit which he said increases the spread of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI’s).

Meanwhile, the government through the Ministry of Education has released a school calendar which indicates that the 2023/2024 academic year will commence on September 11, 2023.
