In a three-day Joint Permanent Commission on Defence and Security Meeting held in Blantyre, defence and security officials from Malawi and Mozambique expressed their commitment to combat terrorism and maintain security in the region. Recognizing the shared threat posed by terrorism, the officials emphasized the importance of joint operations and information sharing. Malawi’s Defence Minister, Harry Mkandawire, highlighted the closure of borders as a measure to prevent terrorists from entering the country. The officials also discussed the challenges posed by individuals posing as refugees while engaging in illegal activities such as human trafficking and smuggling. Minister of Homeland Security, Ken Zikhale Ng’oma, emphasized the impact of terrorism on economies and peace in various countries. The meeting concluded with plans to engage with Zambia on similar security issues in December. Mozambique’s Permanent Secretary of Defence, Casimiro Augusto Mueio, expressed gratitude for Malawi’s contribution to restoring peace in Mozambique’s Northern Province of Cabo Delgado, which had been affected by terrorism.
