Chihana Promises Steady Supply of Food and Fertiliser

Date:

Second Vice-President Enock Chihana has assured Malawians that the government is prioritising access to food and fertiliser as part of efforts to stabilise the national economy.

During his first visit to Mzuzu since being sworn in last week, Chihana—who also leads the Alliance for Democracy (Aford)—said the administration is determined to tackle the economic challenges left by the previous government, starting with ensuring national food security.

He announced that maize imports from Zambia are expected to reach Malawi within two weeks to help address the ongoing shortage.

“The Ministry of Agriculture has been working hard to ensure that maize reaches the country on time. Our goal is simple—no Malawian family should sleep on an empty stomach,” Chihana said.

He also confirmed that fertiliser shipments are currently on their way to Malawi and will be distributed soon.

Chihana added that once food and fertiliser supplies are stable, the government will turn its focus to improving fuel availability across the country.

Meanwhile, Blue Alliance deputy national campaign director Trywell Kasawala urged citizens to remain optimistic, saying government efforts to stabilise prices of key goods are underway.

Traditional Authority Thula applauded Chihana’s visit and called for continued partnership between government and traditional leaders to promote community development.

In addition, Blue Alliance Northern Region chairperson Dennis Mhone encouraged residents to rally behind the government’s economic recovery plans, emphasising that national unity is vital for progress.
