A devastating crime has led to a significant sentence in Lilongwe, Malawi. Nasoni Moyenda, a 28-year-old man, has been convicted and sentenced to 20 years in prison for raping a 10-year-old girl on December 23rd, 2024 ¹.
According to Inspector Hastings Chigalu, Public Relations Officer for Lilongwe Police Station, Moyenda committed the heinous crime at a church’s toilet in Chiuzira Trading Center. After the assault, Moyenda attempted to bribe the victim with K500 to keep quiet ¹.
Moyenda pleaded guilty but claimed he was misled by a witch doctor who promised him wealth if he had sex with a virgin. However, the court rejected his plea, citing the severity of the offense, which carries a life imprisonment sentence ¹.
Senior Resident Magistrate Bracious Kondowe emphasized that the victim was forced into the sexual act without her consent, as she was not capable of giving consent due to her age. Moyenda was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment with hard labor.
