The Ministry of Defense has entered into a K900 million contract with the Southern Region Water Board (SRWB) to revamp and modernize the water infrastructure at the maritime unit in Monkey Bay, Mangochi. The existing water system, characterized by its antiquated design and numerous leaks, has been a significant financial burden for the military personnel stationed at the unit. The rehabilitation project is intended to address these challenges and enhance the water supply for the maritime unit.

The SRWB Chairperson, Brown Mpinganjira, underscored the significance of the project, emphasizing not only the contractual benefits but also the shared commitment between the two organizations to deliver safe, clean, and reliable water services to the community. The project is expected to significantly improve the quality of life for the military personnel and their families, as well as contribute to the overall well-being of the surrounding community.

The rehabilitation efforts will involve a comprehensive overhaul of the water system, including the replacement of outdated pipes, the installation of new water treatment facilities, and the implementation of leak detection and repair measures. These upgrades will not only reduce water wastage but also enhance the efficiency and sustainability of the water supply.

The project is anticipated to have a positive impact on the maritime unit’s operations, as access to a reliable and clean water supply is essential for various activities, including firefighting, sanitation, and hygiene. Additionally, the project aligns with the government’s broader efforts to improve the infrastructure and living conditions of the population in Malawi.
